There are many worthwhile books for the aspiring jewelry appraisers’ library, from gemological handbooks to tomes on jewelry history and appraisal practice. Retired appraiser Karen Howard’s new book From Start to Success: The Business of Jewellery Appraising: A Guide to Building and Growing Your Practice is unlike these staid and sturdy reference volumes and more like a one-on-one career success coaching course with a friendly instructor. Written as a comprehensive but approachable resource for those who have chosen this career path, From Start to Success is compact and packed with practical advice.

The book is broken up into three main parts: Getting Started, Working with Clients, and Building a Lasting Career. Each of these sections contains several chapters that cover everything from the prerequisite gemological education options, to choosing a home-based or off-site office, to how to grow your professional reputation.
