September Is the Perfect Time for a Business Reset

September has always felt a little like a second January.

Summer is winding down, routines are returning, and suddenly the end of the year doesn't seem quite so far away. For jewellery appraisers, it's also a very good time to stop and ask:

How is my business actually doing?

Not how busy you've been. Not how many appraisals you've completed. But whether the business you're building is moving in the direction you want it to go.

Time to reset!

Start With Your Clients

Take a look at where your clients have come from so far this year.

Were they referred by jewellery stores? Insurance professionals? Lawyers or estate professionals? Previous clients? Did they find you online?

Understanding where your business is actually coming from is far more useful than simply saying, "I need more clients."

Once you know what's working, you can decide where to put more of your time and energy.

If one jewellery store has consistently referred clients to you, perhaps it's time to strengthen that relationship. If previous clients are returning or referring friends, consider how you can make follow-up a more deliberate part of your business.

Look at the Client Experience

Next, consider what happens when someone contacts you.

Is it easy for them to understand what you do?

Do they know what type of appraisal they need?

Do you explain your fees confidently?

Do they know what to expect when they arrive?

And what happens after the appraisal is finished?

A professional client experience isn't created by one big impressive gesture. It's usually built through a series of small things done consistently—from the first enquiry to the final follow-up.

Revisit Your Professional Positioning

Here's another question worth asking:

If a potential client found your business today, would they immediately understand why they should choose you?

Your qualifications are important, but they are only part of your professional positioning.

Your experience, niche, communication style, professionalism and the way you make clients feel all contribute to the answer to one important question:

Why you?

If your website, social media or marketing materials simply list your services and credentials, September may be a good time to look at whether they are also communicating your value.

Check Your Pricing and Boundaries

Business habits have a way of creeping in.

Maybe you've started squeezing in appointments when you really don't have time. Perhaps you're giving away more advice than you intended. Maybe you're still charging a fee you set several years ago because changing it feels uncomfortable.

Ask yourself:

Does the way I'm currently running my practice still make sense for the business I want today?

You don't have to change everything. Sometimes one new boundary, one clearer policy or one pricing adjustment can make a significant difference.

Choose One Priority for the Rest of the Year

You don't need a 20-point business plan for the final few months of the year.

Choose one meaningful priority.

It might be developing two new referral relationships. It could be improving your client follow-up system, updating your website, reviewing your fees or becoming more consistent with your marketing.

Then decide what you can realistically do each week to move that priority forward.

Small, consistent actions are usually far more valuable than an ambitious plan that never makes it off the page.

Your September Business Check-In

Before September gets busy, give yourself an hour to work on your appraisal business rather than simply working in it.

Ask yourself:

What's working?

What's not working?

Where are my best clients coming from?

What could I make easier for my clients?

What needs to change before the end of the year?

And finally:

What is the one thing I could improve now that would make the biggest difference to my business?

You don't need to rebuild your business every September.

Sometimes you simply need to look at it with fresh eyes.
